Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojana (PMKSY)

The Government of India initiated Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojana (PMKSY) in 2015 with the aim of attaining “Har Khet Ko Pani” (water to every field) and enhancing farm productivity through optimal use of water. The primary objective of PMKSY is to increase the coverage of irrigation and foster water conservation by providing more crop per drop.

PMKSY merges different irrigation schemes into a single framework, with an emphasis on irrigation development, watershed management, and water conservation. The scheme promotes the implementation of drip and sprinkler irrigation systems to facilitate water conservation and higher crop production among farmers. The scheme is executed by several ministries — such as Agriculture, Water Resources, and Rural Development — to ensure coordinated and effective implementation.

Key elements include the Accelerated Irrigation Benefit Programme (AIBP), Per Drop More Crop, and Watershed Development. The scheme also aids in micro-irrigation infrastructure and encourages water storage structures like farm ponds and check dams.

By improving irrigation potential and encouraging sustainable water management, PMKSY is a key factor in augmenting India’s agricultural productivity and ensuring long-term water security.
